POLITICAL PARTIES

When you register to vote in Escambia County, you may register as a Democrat, Republican, another minor political party (see below), or you may register as No Party Affiliation (NPA).

Only Democrats and Republicans have primaries (nominating elections). You may only vote in the primary of the party for which you register. However, all voters may vote for candidates or issues in nonpartisan races, such as school board members, judges, and referenda.

In a general election, all voters may vote for any candidate or issue in their districts that appear on the ballot.

Further, if all candidates for an office have the same party affiliation and the winner will have no opposition in the general election, all qualified voters, regardless of party affiliation, may vote in the primary election for that office. This is referred to as a "universal primary".
